Education

Children can read about history in a book, or experience it firsthand at the Johnson County Museum.

We invite you to bring your school class, home schooling group, scouting troop, family, or daycare group for a visit. Groups are welcome at any time, but if you would like a guided tour or the museum or a visit to the 1830s cabin, please call us several weeks in advance to make arrangements.

We offer programs in the pioneer cabin, museum tours for different age groups, and special craft projects. We have many educational materials such as games, puzzles, crafts, and fun facts to enhance the learning experience. We have outdoor picnic tables and indoor space for groups if you decide to bring your lunch.

Time Travelers' History Camp -

July 25-29, 2011

Fifteen 3rd and 4th graders enjoyed a week of fun and discovery at Time Travelers' History Camp 2011 at the Johnson County Museum.

Campers learned about our earliest inhabitants, Pioneer days, the Civil War years, and daily life through the mid-20th century, through interactive and hands-on gallery tours, craft activities, music, games, and special guest presentations.

Please check back in the spring for more information about Timer Travelers Camp for 2012!

Just For Kids.....

Victorian Games and Toys

There were lots of different toys kids played with 100 years ago. Here are a few you can make at home!

Click on the picture of the Jumping Jack above to print out the pattern, and the instructions. Did you know that the exercise called "Jumping Jacks" was based upon this toy?

You can also make Victorian paper dolls, an optical illusion spinning toy called a Thaumatrope, or learn how to make a silhouette picture.

Hendricks Cabin Coloring Sheet

The Hendricks Cabin has been a part of Johnson County since the 1830s.  It is located just north of the Johnson County Museum, and is open for scheduled tours and special museum events.

Click here for a coloring sheet of the Hendricks Cabin.

I Spy with My Little Eye......

Click on the image to print out our museum scavenger hunt page. How many of these items can you spot when you visit the museum?

Hands-on Exhibits at the Johnson County Museum

We believe kids learn more when they can interact with exhibits, and use their natural curiosity to play, make-believe, and discover. At the Johnson County Museum kids can have fun playing with pioneer and Victorian dress-up clothes, imagine a  journey through the wilderness in our life-sized replica of a Conestoga wagon, do a museum scavenger hunt, and experience toys and games from years gone by.

There's also an indoor play area with a log cabin playhouse, a train set, a sandbox, and dinosaurs.

The handprint symbol you see throughout the museum invites young visitors to "Please Touch the Exhibit!"

The Johnson County Museum has been given the Home Educators Resource Directory seal of approval to recognize our support of the home school community.

Please call the museum if you would like to schedule a tour for your home schooling group, or other school or service group.
